Postoperative Care for Extractions with Immediate Dentures & Denture Aftercare

01.

Take pain medication prior to the anesthetic wearing off to avoid severe discomfort from the operation.

Keep biting with firm pressure for 1 hour to help control bleeding and help facilitate healing.

Do not remove denture(s) for the first 24 hours to help control swelling.

Do not remove denture(s) for the first 24 hours to help control swelling.

Rest for at least 24 hours following surgery, more if needed.

Do not rinse within the first 24 hours. The postoperative appointment will be the first time you should rinse. Following that, you need to rinse 2 times a day with warm salt water or a medicated mouth rinse if prescribed.

Keep denture(s) in mouth for the first three nights. After three nights, remove overnight and soak in water.

08.

For the first three days avoid smoking, drinking through straws, vigorous swishing, spitting, carbonated fluids, and hot food and liquids.

09.

Your diet should consist of soft foods; such as yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, etc. so as to not disrupt the form of the denture.

10.

Do not disturb extraction sites or sutures allow faster healing and reduce risk of infection or other complications.

11.

Be aware that speaking, eating, and swallowing will be difficult at first. You can practice speaking by reading out loud. These actions will gradually get easier as you get used to your dentures.

12.

You will return in 10 days for a soft tissue conditioner to assist the denture(s) in fitting during the healing period.
